Giving, Serving and Volunteering

Christians believe that God is good, he loves all he has made, including us, and he is generous in his love towards us. This is summed up beautifully in one of the Bible’s best known verses John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

Jesus demonstrated God’s love and generosity to us. We are called to share that with others. Not just called, because if we know that love personally we will be motivated to give generously.

What have we got to give? We have time, money, possessions, land (garden or allotment) or property (that we own, rent or occupy), natural human talents, plus supernatural spiritual giftings.

As a parish our greatest resource is people. God will bring transformation to our community through people like us! Committed, loving, serving, gifted, faithful and generous people.

We are called to give generously. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 9:6, “Remember this — a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop.”

Often we are nervous about this! We are much more inclined to hang on tightly to what we have in the fear that we may not have enough for tomorrow. People define this as a poverty spirit. It can affect the big business person as well as the beggar.

God’s word addresses that fear and reassures us – 2 Corinthians 9:8, “And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.“
